Comments Africa, Kenya, Diani Beach, Chale Sands Resort, Diving the Crab
Normally on a dive I´m the only guy blowing rings under water on safety stop. This time however a Swedish instructor girl Carolina surpassed me in that area. She managed to blow quite a few really good ones going all the way up to the surface, and then only it counts as real good she told me. My rings broke immediately maybe due to a lack or chance to practice. To get away from Christmas and New Year fuss and cold at home I aimed for Africa Kenia this year. I´ve been in the north in the Watamu area (undercurrent chapbook 2020) so it would be turning south this time. Diani beach rang a distant bell in my diver ears, so I looked around there. Found that luxurious Chale Sands resort on a peninsula close to the shore. It was a bit heavy on my budget, but well, I turn 73, how many more years would I have, so …. Remember, “you don´t stop diving when you get old, you get old when ….. “ It was pouring when we touched down at Mombasa, only a short tropical downpour or would that be an omen for my holidays?
On arrival at Chale the Swedish girl happily told me” we have a lot of lovely nudis here”. Well this was about the last thing I wanted to spot under water, I´m the “looking out into the blue” type of diver. So I was a bit worried if the reef here could satisfy me. Our first dive took us a bit south. My buddy was Greg, surprise here, an US diver you seldom find in this part of the world, because I guess it´s a hell of a trip whether from east or west coast to come here. Vis was around 5 m , 28 C, went with only a 3 mm chicken vest. It was a shallow reef sparsely covered with coral in about 15 to 18 m. My disappointment must have shown in my face as Greg later told me: “Mike, it´s not gona get better”. Maybe my expectations were too high for this area. They offer two tanks in the morning, steel tanks, you hardly need weights, Nitrox is for free. At low tide you need reef shoes to reach the boat “Kitty” where luckily they have 2 choices to start, right from the beach or with too strong a surf at the jetty in the back of the island where you arrive by tractor/boat from the main land.
Dzinani Dive. Way up north to a lovely reef with lots of overhangs, crevices, boulders in 18 m. Fish life was good, a bunch of yellow snappers, a school of th ... Subscribe to get the full story. For Subscribers Only  Active subscribers continue reading here
