Comments The Great
Everything is in walking distance. We walked from the airport to our accommodation at Cocos Castaway. The Cocos Castaway is the absolute best, everything you want is there. Washing machine in the room, freezer on the balcony, sharp knives for the sour dough bread purchased from the local bakery, a short stroll to the foreshore for evening drinks, supermarket across the road, close enough to the library to get WIFI and even portable clothes racks to dry clothes in the air con overnight. Just perfect.
The Diving
Having exclusively dived in Indonesia where concierge service is provided it was a refreshing change to be more involved. We lugged tanks and equipment, set up our own equipment, rinsed and hung up our gear at end of the day, assisted with getting the boat onto the trailer. Once you got to know Dieter's routine it was best to stick to it and help him along.
Three course lunch was provided each day, cup of soup, freshly made bread, meat and salad followed by bag of lollies. Yum.
Each dive day had two dives. We started after 8am and finishing before 4pm a long day. Surface interval was generally on Direction Island and a minimum of 2 hours. Direction Island has toilet facilities which were very welcome.
There are plentiful and varied dive sites the most memorable for me was Winter Wall, a deep dive with a magnificent upward view of a huge single coral. We finished of the dive seeing the resident dugong rubbing itself up against the anchor chain.
The Weather
The weather could have been much better; it was windy, rainy and overcast. The seas were choppy and getting onto the boat after diving was interesting to say the very least. Alas we took it in our stride and braved the elements as all good divers would.
The Bad
The cost of the flights from Perth is excessive and to top it off when you book and pay for additional luggage you are informed that the “additional” bag may not arrive at the check-in counter. In our case had been booked and paid for the “additional” baggage some months ahead. Now, if I had turned up at the airport with extra luggage that has not been prebooked that is different but being told your additional bag may not arrive is disconcerting.

All things considered a great time was had by all of us, 3 divers and a snorkeler, and the answer is YES I would love to go again.

So why against all odds you ask?? Well, I clumsily fell off the boat on the first day coming up the steps, my brother flooded his camera and broke the strap on his dive computer, Dieter's big boat broke down on the first day and we got towed home by the Australian Federal Police so we dived from the smaller boat for the rest of the week.
