Comments This was not a dive trip, but since I came all the way to Australia I had to get in a few dives. In between Melbourne and Sydney we went to Port Douglas. It was recommended to not be as touristy as Cairns. It was a pleasant small town which we enjoyed. I personally cannot compare it to Cairns, but people said it was less crowded. I dove mid November while my wife snorkeled.
We went to Agincourt and St. Crispin Reefs. The coral was in pristine condition with very little bleaching. Lots of fish. Great dives. Big dive deck on the AquaQuest. Snorkelers were never in the way of divers. All ScubaPro equipment but I brought my own. Stinger suits (apparently not the right season for them) and wet suits provided.
Dive masters were knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. Good at pointing out things that might have been missed. Dive times were limited, but with limited surface intervals dive time was comparable in 3 dives to doing 2 dives with Cozumel’s Aldora Divers (over 2 hours). Surface was almost calm and there was little current. Food on the boat was very good and they made sure you got enough. Good communication (emails) from the states when I had questions.
We stayed at the Meridian which was close to Four Mile Beach and not far from the marina. Free pickup from Divers Den, but could have walked. We would stay there again. Nice people and kitchen included.
