Comments This was our third trip aboard Aquacat, our second pandemic-era trip. We chose this special Georgetown to Nassau itinerary to experience new places – Georgetown, San Salvador, Cat Island, others. It turned out to be a special trip with unusual sightings from the deck, including dolphins and a pilot whale. Under the surface, seeing new dive sites was interesting, but the sites produced only the usual suspects in the fish department. We saw very few sharks, which was disappointing. They became more prevalent as we worked our way back to Nassau. We missed crowd favorites such as the washing machine and shark feed since we were exploring the further islands. I didn’t mind – we were there to explore new places.

Every day, non-diving activities were made available. Booze Cruises were popular as was fishing, shore trips, and snorkel boarding.

On board, the boat was as spacious and comfortable as always. Our triple cabin was roomy and had exceptionally effective, individually controlled air conditioning. We had plenty of storage space and a generous head with full shower and many, many hooks for wet clothes and towels. The sun deck had only a few loungers due to damage from sun and a pandemic-related shortage making them impossible to replace quickly. No one seemed to mind terribly – we made do with yoga mats when the chairs were full. Other decks were well appointed, and there was never a lack of places to sit.

As the boat was not packed to the gills, we had room on the dive deck to spread out. This was a treat. The crew was always available to assist with gear – usually without being prompted – and patiently, gracefully responded when asked for help at inopportune times. Dives were on time to the extent that the boat was on time – since we were visiting sites not commonly visited by AquaCat, the captain had to locate the sites, and then the crew had to locate the mooring – if there was one. Wind didn’t always help, and we had to skip some intended sites in favor of, well, more favorable ones. But, once we were securely moored, crew was efficient about topping off tanks as needed, handling any issues, and getting us quickly into the water.

That is probably the biggest takeaway – the AquaCat crew handled the unknowns with grace and flexibility while also delivering the signature AquaCat luxury experience guests expect – the majority on this trip were repeat guests.

We had one Covid situation – the chef tested positive on day 2. The captain handled the situation well, offering us the opportunity to weigh in on canceling the trip or pressing on. Since every single soul on board was vaccinated, and most boosted, we opted to press on. The chef had been isolating, and other crew members including an engineer took over kitchen duties, wearing masks. No one else got sick, and we all received our negative pre-travel test results on the last day of the trip. Despite the chef being in isolation, food was varied, plentiful, and delicious.

My ratings in the photography section are based on my husband’s experience since I never dive with a camera. He has a fancy rig and was disappointed with subject availability but suspected it was due to visiting sites rarely visited by divers. As we got closer to Nassau, more subjects were available.
