Comments Blackbeards is famous for its low-budget liveaboards in the Bahamas. The Sea Hunter and its sister boat Morning Star are beautiful sailing vessels and terrible scuba boats. The tanks perch on tiny benches, and the rest of your gear is “over there” in a faraway wet box. The deck is arched not flat, with narrow passages between anywhere and anywhere else. The 3 “cabins” each have 8 bunks and are accessed by a steep ladder. All of your non-wet things stay with you in your bunk, there is no other storage space. Battery charging is allowed in your bunk. I tried to use chargers on the galley table, but there were too many of us, and the table was also for eating.
There are 4 tiny marine heads. There is one shower for 26 passengers and crew, and that shower is in the galley where there are also 6 bunks.
I had been warned about all this before the trip.
And I had a FABULOUS time!
The crew was outstanding - competent, skilled, and cheerful. The other divers were a mostly family & friends group who were delightful to be around.
The diving was pretty good. There were 3 dives per day, 8:30 am, 11 am, and 4 pm. The corals looked pretty healthy after a winter. There were fewer fish than I expect, likely due to overfishing and invasive red lionfish. I recorded one loggerhead turtle and a few reef sharks during the whole week. We did the chummed Austin Smith shark dive. That is a wild animal show.
Food was hit-or-miss, sometimes it was only okay, and some meals were delicious. Food is served in the galley, but there is table space for only 6 diners, so you carry your plate up the ladder and find a place to sit in the horseshoe bench to eat off your lap. It’s OK unless it’s windy and your nacho chips blow away. The galley ran out of Swiss Miss on Tuesday. Very sad.
I highly recommend Blackbeards for divers who want to spend a couple thousand less than a luxury liveaboard.
