Comments This was my third time on the BA IV in 18 months (and 13 of those months were during the Covid lockdown), so you might correctly infer how much I like this operation! It's a truly comfortable boat, with single beds that can be combined into a king, plenty of storage, and the boat boasts lots of places to hang out in comfort. The top deck is partially covered as well as having a sun deck; the dining area has two long tables, fish and critter ID books; there are sofas with cushions for hanging out in the shade as well. The reason I keep coming back is twofold: lovely reefs, with lush coral and lots and lots of fish, big and small; and the superb staff of the BA IV, helmed by Captain Dennis Gautreau. Chef Jerry and sous chef Jean are fantastic cooks and charming people, never forgetting a food preference; hostess Elia is clairvoyent; DM/First Mate John is an experienced Belize diver, as are the Belizean DM brother team whose names I can't recall perfectly--my bad, because they were terrific. This was the first time conditions were good enough to dive the Blue Hole; ironically, I didn't love the dive, since the water has virtually no life in the hole, one is limited to 30 minutes, and the cluster f**k conditions of flailing divers with torches and camera lights is profoundly annoying. But hey, it's checklisted! My favorite dives were in around Half Moon Caye in the Lighthouse Reef atoll. There one can have it all, cruising on the top of the wall, looking down into the blue and the richly festooned wall, with its huge sponges and deepwater gorgonians, and passing sharks, eagle rays, and huge grouper; then looking to the other side, one beholds a meadow of soft and hard corals. There are tons of fish, and it looks to me like the Caribbean of 30 years ago. Beautiful and deeply satisfying diving.
