Comments This was my fifth trip aboard the Belize Aggressor IV, so obviously I like the boat and the operation. But it was a shock to me to see the reefs after 18 months. SCTLD has killed a lot of stony corals, around 85%, and what used to be vibrant coral is now covered in algae. Not surprisingly, the biomass is down as well. I should emphasize that this is not unique to Belize but the situation all over the Caribbean.

There were a number of gray reef and nurse sharks on most dives, as well as Nassau grouper (some as friendly as puppies). The contours of the reefs, which can be very dramatic, remain the same, and the many soft corals and sea fans look healthy. None of the other divers on the boat had been here before, so they didn't know how degraded the coral had become, a case of ignorance making you happier than institutional memory.

The crew was terrific, helmed by Captain Shea, DMs Alex and Roque, and Chef Jerry and stewardess Elia. I love the "fintastic" service (they put your fins on on the transom, and remove them on the ladder). Wine and beer are included, and Elia seemed to remember everyone's preferences. Food was excellent, and Jerry and sous chef Zander put on a truly beautiful Thanksgiving dinner.
