We had dived all over the Caribbean in the past 30 years but somehow, never Belize, so grabbed the chance to dive a week on the Belize Aggressor IV. Our deluxe cabin (the middle category) had plenty of space and the beds were memory foam and comfortable; food was quite good, helmed by personable Chef Carlos; and the dive operation offered warm and helpful service (particularly donning and removing fins). Captain Dennis lead his team by example, pitching in on every task, which we found admirable. But it was the diving that really impressed us. We are both experienced divers and active in marine conservation, and the condition of the reefs (especially Lighthouse Reef's many sites) dazzled us. Huge sponges, deepwater gorgonia, extensive stony coral cover, impressive numbers of diadema long-spine sea urchins and crinoids (both indicators of reef health) testified to the health of the reefs. They were, simply, gorgeous. And probably owing to lack of pollution, plenty of current, and few divers, not only were the reefs beautiful, but robustly filled with life, large and small. We saw eagle rays often (8 on one dive alone), plenty of gray reef sharks, stingrays, huge grouper, and big hogfish. Indeed, there was so much large fish life that we tended not to sniff around for the little critters. The reef topography was often high profile, sometimes with walls plummeting to the abyss. It was a relief in a world of bad environmental news to dive such healthy and beautiful reefs and see so much life. The boat was also very comfortable. We took five days after our dive trip inland at the San Ignacio Resort, where we enjoyed its Master Suite, excellent food, and guided visits to the area's Mayan sites. Highly recommended. |
