My fifth liveaboard dive trip to Belize in the last 35 years. I was pleasantly surprised by the recovery of the coral since hurricane Alex in 2010. And the sighting of so much more marine life: multiple sharks on most dives, turtles, octopuses, schools of fish, critters. It made it worth the significant hassle of jumping through the travel restrictions due to covid.
A further "plus" was the incredible bargain price offered by Aggressor--definitely a loss-leader to keep the industry and its employees on their feet. Furthermore, the boat was at 1/2 capacity, meaning every single got a single room. Of course, these benefits are fading, but still present in a lesser form.
Aggressor had excellent COVID protocols, starting at the airport, where they arranged private pick-ups for all guests.
The other guests were an interesting mix! From young and enthusiastic to quiet and mature. Also, from "macho" bossy to can't stop talking/drinking crazy(guess who aggravated each other?). Either of these last two would be very exceptional on a standard trip, but with COVID? Maybe it takes a little crazy to travel at the height of fear?
Without simply listing critters seen, I can say that Belize has returned to being an easy, safe and rewarding dive adventure. Aggressor is by far the best way to experience it, particularly the excellent outer reefs, which are a day away from the mainland.
Go now while the diving pressure is still low.
