Comments Day trip to Turneffe Atoll with Amigos Del Mar. This was a great day trip to one of the offshore islands and reefs from Ambergris Caye. Amigos Del Mar provided a large and comfortable dive boat for the long ride (1 hour out, 2 hours back) to the reefs from Ambergris Caye. The boat had two covered decks (main deck and upper), a marine head, plenty of benches and seating, and an area for preparing lunch and snacks. This trip was 17 divers, which was very uncrowded. Divers were from US, Canada, and Europe. The staff provided a simple but plentiful continental breakfast of fruit, juices, pastries, and coffee on the dock, and a hot home cooked lunch of rice, chicken curry, salad, and desserts at sea. The divers were split into three smaller groups with excellent guides. The U/W terrain varied between the three dive sites (north atoll and Elbow), but generally 30-40 foot depth reef top and the sloping to vertical wall to 100+ feet. Abundant coral and large sea fans and sponges, much healthier and vibrant than the Ambergris Caye reefs, but fewer sharks and turtles than the inshore reefs. Guides allowed divers to dive their profiles, and most divers got their maximum bottom time. Lionfish were much more prevalent at Turneffe than at Ambergris Caye, but guides and other boat crew were very aggressive and successful in "harvesting" the lionfish, which are provided to local restaurants and families. Overall, an excellent trip and highly recommended for those staying on Ambergris Caye that can't do the offshore resorts or liveaboards.
