Comments This was our third trip on the Aggressor to Belize- last trip was 2005.
It is easy diving, the boat has always been good with attentive crew, good food, and the ability to dive your own profile with your buddy. They do 5 dives a day- even though the dive times are specified, if you want to just do one dive in the morning or afternoon- you can go in when you want, just plan on being back for lunch or when they plan to move to the next mooring.
We have been seeing huge degradation to the reefs all over the world - it is getting to the point where it is not worth going back to some places- but Belize pleasantly surprised us in some ways, and saddened us in others. We still got to see the sponges and sea fans on the walls, but to a lesser degree, and the beautiful fans and staghorn/elkhorn coral around the top of the Blue Hole have been replaced with sand and few fish. The visibility in the Hole, was terrible- looking at my photos from'05 shows the dramatic difference. The numbers of fish were way down, and the groupers were not as big- but not as many lionfish were sighted as expected. (That's good!)
We always enjoy the trip to Half Moon Cay to photograph the Frigates and Boobies.
We always come into Belize a day early, and stay at the Ft George Hotel, where the Aggressor is docked- makes it very convenient, and gives our luggage a chance to catch up. After the trip, we usually stay a few days to explore Mayan ruins, cave tube and zip line, and go to the Zoo. Belize City is still not safe to wander around, so hiring a guide is recommended.
