Comments Ambergris Caye reefs are severely damaged from hurricanes and town runoff with little color and large amounts of dead spots. Guides did their best to point out interesting fishlife and honored my wishes that they not interact with the nurse sharks and moreys. Although it is common practice here to roll nurse sharks over and make them catatonic and coax green morey eels out of their holes with treats. On the plus side, there were nurse sharks swimming on almost every dive. Eagle Rays on about half the dives. Lots of green morey eels, turtles, black grouper, and yellow-tail snapper. Blue Hole is better seen from a helicopter than from a dive boat. Certainly not worth a two and a half hour boat trip in 3-5ft seas. What did make the trip worthwhile was the side trip to Half Moon Caye and Aquarium. Those were the best dives of the week.

Belize Dive Connection made sure all the dives on my must do list were hit sometime during the week. Best of Ambergris Caye were: Eagle Ray Canyons, Esmeralda, Tackle Box, and Cyprus Gardens. Boat crew were extremely friendly and made a point of interacting with all the divers onboard. They were very open to comments and recommendations about boat procedures. The boat will accommodate over 20 divers but most of the week it was just our group of 10. At the end of each day, the crew washed the regs and BC's and stored them overnight. All we had to worry about was our personal gear. I would have liked to have dived nitrox at least for the deeper morning dives but the analyzer was broken and I won't dive nitrox without analyzing it first.

Sun Breeze hotel is very clean and well run. It is right on the water and next to the dive shop. We had the deluxe rooms which were spacious and had good A/C units. The restaurant is one of the best in San Pedro with food prices in the range of $10 for breakfast, $15 for lunch, and $25 for dinner (USD). There are many other restaurants in walking distance of the hotel but many are small and couldn't accommodate a group of 10 without a reservation. Some of my favorites were the Wild Mango, Fidos, and Elvies. For some local cuisine try Hurricanes.

This is my second trip to Belize and doubt I will return. The people are very friendly, the weather nice, and the businesses very helpful but the reefs are in too bad of shape to make it a good trip for experienced divers.
