Comments We had a good experience with BPD. The crew was attentive and very helpful. After they verified that we could set up our own equipment the first time, and saw how we set it up, they handled it afterwards, which was nice. They also handled rinsing gear between trips, and sanitizing our gear and wetsuits at the end of our diving.
This was a spring break trip with our daughter, a new diver, getting her more acquainted with diving. Only two days of diving.
The first day was to local sites, 5-10 minute trip to the dive sites, and we returned to land for surface intervals. 2 tank day dive and a 1 tank night dive. The corals were in good condition, although not especially colorful.
On our day dives, we saw lobsters, nurse sharks, one reef shark, a turtle, some banded coral shrimp, and quite a few small tropical fish. Also a few French Angels, a decent sized grouper, some sea urchins, some brittle stars, and a midnight parrot fish. Dive site were Victoria Canyon and Mermaids lair.
On the night dive to Hoi Chan, we had a very good experience. We saw several stingrays, an eagle ray, an anemone that had opened up, a few varieties of crabs and hermit crabs, sea urchins, and a conch. The dive was topped off by two rare sights - A green moray being cleaned by a banded coral shrimp, and an octopus.
The second day was a 3 tank trip to the Basel Jones area of Ambergris Caye, about a 30 minute boat trip north. Dive sites were Rocky Point, Robles, and another site called Punta Azul on the way back. In between dives, we went back to land to a dock nearby to relax.
This area seemed to be more highly populated with fish life, and the corals were in very good condition. We saw more similar types of fish that we saw the day before, and the depth was generally deeper. We had one turtle that showed up and swam among us for a bit which was a real treat. We also saw a number of lionfish. No one was prepared for harvesting these, so they were left alone. A pretty good variety of different pufferfish running around. The main unique fish here was a barracuda about 4 foot long.
