Comments Blue Reef Adventures operates both sport fishing and diving tours but occasionally organizes a week focused mainly on diving. This was my second time joining one of these trips. The operator is based out of Placencia, but diving is within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. Accommodations are on South Water Caye, about an hour boat ride from Placencia. There are three small resorts on the island. The one utilized by Blue Reef Adventures features comfortable bungalows, each with its own terrace right on the water. Food is served in a patio dining room and features local dishes.. Groups are quite small - maximum 12 guests, so diving can be very individualized and service is fantastic. The owner, Polly Alford is a PADI Dive Master/Instructror and often leads dives herself. She also has two other dive masters/instructors as part of her team. There are rarely any other divers at the various sites, mostly within the marine reserve. The underwater landscape features excellent soft coral cover and a decent amount of hard coral. There are lost of small fish but very few large ones. Nurse sharks are frequently encountered as are turtles, but other types of sharks are rare. One of the highlights, for those who are interested, is spearing invasive lionfish. Polly is an excellent hunter (she holds the Belize record for largest lionfish harvested)and is adept at pointing out fish that may be hiding in overhangs or crevices. Lionfish harvested are served up as ceviche or batter fried, constituting a great addition to the already tasty food offerings.
