Comments I have been diving for > 20 years, with my first trip to Caye Caulker in 2004, but over the past few years, I have been making multiple trips each season, as it is very easy for me to get to. Over time, it has become like a second home for us, and we will likely spend part of our retirement there. While I love the diving, my husband (who is not a diver) and our teen (my dive buddy) love the island above water, so in addition to my review of diving there over the 2025 winter season, this review includes a lot about staying on the island as well.

Diving

It is all boat diving from Caye Caulker, and there are a number of sites that you can go to from Caye Caulker. This year, I did a few local dives (a night dive to the Caye Caulker marine reserve and Caye Chapel South x 3), Esmerelda (has 21 dive sites in that area) x 5, Turneffe North and The Wit Wreck (a new dive location). In other years, I have also gone on 2 Blue Hole trips (with the Half Moon Caye & Aquarium dive sites), and multiple trips to both Turneffe Elbow and Spanish Bay.

Most dives are between 60 - 80 ft, ~ 45 min dives. Lots of Caribbean Reef Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Spotted Eagle Rays, Sting Rays, Green Moray Eels, both green and loggerhead turtles, Groupers, Octopus (on the night dive), spotted drum fish and many tropical fish and small critters. Some seasons, I've had dolphins join us on our dive (which is always magical). I often see something new to me or something I've only seen a few times. On one of the dives at Turneffe, I saw a sharptail eel.

When I have friends down who dive, I always arrange a trip to Esmerelda, as diving with the sharks is always great for people who haven't done it before. It is not uncommon to have a nurse shark follow you.

The Wit Trip was exciting, and I highly recommend it. As of March 2025, Blue Wave Divers was the only outfit certified to take groups out. Joey, their owner, had them all certified through the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA). It was sunk in 2021 on a sandy area to avoid any coral reef impact and to create an artificial reef that helps protect the Turneffe Atoll. The marine flora and fauna have already developed a lot, with many fish joining them and will continue to grow over the coming years. The second two dives were at Calabash (both beautiful dives), with one of our surface intervals to visit the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve, where we had lunch and a nice chat with one of their workers. I am looking forward to returning to the wit.

For the Blue Hole, I'm one of the ~ 50% of divers that don't enjoy the actual Blue Hole Dive, but I go back for the two dives (Half Moon Caye & Aquarium), after which are truly spectacular.

Dive Operator
I predominantly dive with Blue Wave Divers, but I have also enjoyed diving with Scuba Sensation and have tried to go out with Sunrise a few times, as they also have an excellent reputation.
