Comments Our fourth Christmas diving vacation where we put the emphasis on accommodation and variety of restaurants available within walking distance. Diving is a secondary consideration for this trip. In this regard, San Pedro and Ambergris Caye did not disappoint. Ramon’s is a beautiful resort, recently completely rebuilt after a fire in 2013 it was modern, clean, and well-appointed with great staff.
Our room, a seaside private cabana was perfect, isolated from everything else but very close to all the facilities. Service from all the staff was 5 stars all the way. I can highly recommend this resort diving or not. The restaurant was very nice, great menu choices, but we chose to eat out every night as per our plan.
The dive shop and boats were only about 100 feet away from our front door which was an added luxury for us, plus lockers on the dock for overnight storage.
They have a variety of boats, and we were on the same one for all four days of our diving, with the same crew and DM’s for all dives. They go out for one tank dives at 9am, 11:30am and 2pm. Depending on your package, you can pick and choose whichever departures you want to use up your pre-paid dives. All dive sites were only about 10 mins away. Extended trips to sites like the Blue Hole are available for added charges.
The diving was generally disappointing, with little difference to each site. Visibility was not that good by Caribbean standards, fish life big and small was not nearly as abundant as say Bonaire or Little Cayman. The reefs looked healthy enough, but were bland compared to other destinations we are used to.
Nurse sharks were, however everywhere, and helped make the dives more interesting. We were treated to an incredible, albeit short, encounter at depth by two dolphins who appeared out of nowhere, played around a few minutes within feet of us, and then disappeared. The wind and constant surge made diving a little bit of work, and getting back on the boat was a bit of a challenge, but the crew was always very helpful and made it as easy as it could have been.
We only dove for 3 days, and were happy we did, but we were glad we hadn’t spent the money just to go diving here, because we would have been very disappointed.
Over all, resort & dive operation were top notch, but the diving in this part of Belize does not live up to the hype. San Pedro was a fun place to visit, we might even consider a return visit, but wouldn’t go for the diving. Before we return to Belize, I will have to research the quality of diving at the other locations first to ensure the diving will be worth it.
