Comments I was in Belize in Jan 2023 and this summer has been devastating to the corals. There is so much bleaching which has also reduced the other marine life. We rarely saw any lobsters or crabs and eels only on the night dive. No shrimps and only 1 lettuce sea slug. It was very sad. The typical fish still seem to be doing well (nurse and reef sharks, parrotfish, rays, damselfish, angelfish, chromis, grouper, etc). We saw very few puffers of any kind (in Jan the sharpnose puffer must have been breeding because there were thousands!). The hard corals have been hit hard - the lettuce corals were 100% bleached. The brain corals are starting to bleach as are the cactus corals (used to be deep red, now light pink) Staghorn seems to be the last hard coral to suffer but we did see some starting to bleach. The DMs said that all the pillar coral has died off in the past 3 years. Rick continues to run an excellent operation and the dive staff is still great.
It is becoming obvious that since the death of the founder, the current owner is not investing in the operation (both resort and dive operation). The nitrox is not long done on site so Ramon's has to purchase it meaning they may run out. They are trying to convince the owner to repair or replace the nitrox system. On the resort side, you can see small things that are not being repaired (our safe was broken, the gate latch was broken on their sister property, the breaker kept tripping in our room). The staff is still trying very hard and have a good attitude but there are some leadership issues (the property manager decided to host a lunch for his staff of 15 at the same dive as our boat returned for a noon surface interval. This was poor planning so the kitchen was backed up and the divers waiting 40+ min to get food).
San Pedro has gotten crazy busy with all the cart and large construction truck traffic -- hopefully this will improve as some of the projects complete. The DMs believe if the water temps improve in a few months there is hope for the coral to recover.
