Comments Our fifth Peter Hughes Belize charter in 12 years. Amazingly, the crew maintains good humor and pleasant demeanor despite doing the same thing almost every week . . . and that’s the secret to their success. The PHD website no longer shows the crew . . . but the limitlessly experienced relief captain Jerry ran a good ship.
Trip is 1st night [Sat.] out to the reefs, dive 5+ days, motor back to Belize City on Fri. Well organized operation but with the onerous and offensive "waivers" (intended to convince you, "We are never liable for death and other side-effects.") The diving is as good as ever. Two in the morning, two in the afternoon, one after dinner, every day, no chiseling; 2 early on Friday; we skipped Blue Hole, so had total of 26, average bottom time 55 min. Most of the diving is around Lighthouse Reef. All Nitrox 32 if you're certified; if you aren't you can do it without missing a dive. Few large fish (I expect they have all been eaten) but excellent small fish & invertebrates. The walls & corals are as spectacular as ever.
We had air-conditioning trouble three times. Twice the boat A/C went down and was restored reasonably quickly when (and only when) we complained. The 3d time was on Friday headed back. Our cabin (and some others) temperature got up to 91 and stayed there (measured by our dive computers) until nearly midnight, while we were trying to pack for the trip home. The crew response (several times) was variations on, "Yeah, it's hot in here. But it's not malfunctioning." Made for a really miserable (and unnecessary) end to a super trip.
Transfers are very smooth . . . Rudy the cab driver is still the mainstay in Belize. We went on a good USAir connection through Charlotte but it has been eliminated so the next trip will be through a less desirable gateway, Atlanta or (ewwww) Miami.
