Comments Turneffe Island is a luxury resort where one can dive, fish, or enjoy the beautiful (about 350 yard long) island. This is our second trip there. The accommodations are private and luxurious.
Diving is from small boats with racks for 10 or 12 tanks. Could handle 12 divers, we never saw more than 9 or 10. Back-roll entry, good ladder over the stern for recovery. No cover, no shower, no head, but the boat goes back to island after every dive, and the run from the dock to dive site rarely exceeds 15 minutes, among the other lovely islands. About 15 dives a week, we did 22 in 10 days. The crew handles all the gear between your set-up on day 1 and when they break it down and thoroughly wash it at trip’s end.
The diving is excellent, all the Caribbean usual suspects. We were blessed with being on the boat with the incomparable Brad: careful diver, all-knowing reef biology expert, and lionfish nemesis... “We will see what Mother Nature has in store for us today... And whatever it is, we will thank her.” Safety stops are usually on the reef, and the boat picks up the divers where they surface.
Nitrox is available, but not necessary for 2-3 dives/day. We exceeded 80 ft depth only once, in the Blue Hole (133 ft.) We like the Hole (this was probably our 6th dive) but the real attraction is that the all-day Blue Hole trip includes dives on Long Cay Wall and Halfmoon Wall, the best dives of the week, as well as a picnic on Halfmoon Cay. (That trip is on one of the larger boats, with cover, head and comfortable seats.)
The service is excellent all round. The food is good, but in our opinion not every dish needs peppers in it. We had an air-conditioning failure (even in May, bad news in Belize.) I asked for help at the desk. Within 10 minutes an engineer showed up, and another 15 minutes had us back cooling. He had a spare capacitor!
Excellent connections through Atlanta & Houston . . . perhaps we’ll see you there.
