Long known as the best shore diving destination, to me Bonaire has always been just a great vacation diving destination overall. This was my wife's and my 14th trip to Captain Don's. Like a trip back home, the dive op is familiar (in fact the DM who gave us our first orientation presentation is still there) the accomodations are comfortable and booking the trip is a no stress event. When I was an instructor, I recommended Bonnaire as the place to complete the open water requirements and a great place to begin to develop buddy skills. Also a great place for that first spooky night dive. So do I expect Dolphins and mantas, no although I have dived with both here. Turtles, tarpon, seahorse, frogfish, squid and octopus... pretty much every trip. Lion fish regrettably yes. Do you see the result of climate change on the reef, again regrettably yes. Lots of algae and a lot less color. But this reef is still protected against other man-made abuse and has fared better than many locations in these warmer waters. So if I don't get to see lots of sharks, fight currents or deal with poor viz why is this good for advanced divers? Little treasures. Develop your buoyancy skills and hover quietly over the burrow of a sail fin blenny waiting for that moment when he does his little dance and pops out of his hole to wave his dorsal fin at potential mates and rivals. Search the corals for a cherubfish, (the only place I've ever seen one). Finally, just be a part of it all, no obstacle to overcome, no challenge to meet just you, your buddy and a world so few members of our species have had the privilege to experience. |
