Comments This was our second trip since Covid, our 6th to Bonaire, and our 4th to Divi. It was pouring rain upon arrival but the rest of our stay was mostly sunny, with breezy conditions keeping away the bugs--the most bug-free trip we've ever had there. Our room was above reception with a peek-a-boo ocean view, but we were able to see everyone coming and going and it was close to the restaurant and the diving. The room had two double beds, TV that was only used once, small refrigerator, AC, desk and drawers, and a balcony with a small table and two chairs. The bathroom was spacious with ample room for toiletries by the sink.

There was a hot and cold breakfast buffet, always a favorite of mine. Because there were two large groups the week we were there, ours from Mars, PA and one from Cleveland, Monday thru Friday was a lunch buffet for $16, a great deal. Most in our group already had a lunch package; we either ate the lunch buffet or peanut butter & jelly sandwiches from a nearby grocery store. Dinners were at Divi or an easy walk to town.

Dive Divi is very organized. There is a locker on the dock shared by two people, which can get a bit crowded (bring a lock). There are 5 boats; our group used two, Cleveland used two, and one boat was for non-group people. Each boat had a captain and a guide, and they changed positions between the two morning dives. We also went on 5 afternoon boat dives. Over the course of 9 dive days, we had 8 or 10 different divemasters, so sometimes we repeated sites, but we didn't have a problem with that. All the divemasters were good, but a couple were better critter-finders than others. We did get to dive the salt pier twice and the last day went to the northern most site.

Having been disappointed in the condition of the hard corals in Roatan during our Feb. trip, we were pleasantly surprised to see the hard corals are in better shape in Bonaire, not to say they're great. There were healthy brain corals the size of large cabbage heads everywhere, and there is a program to grow corals, particularly elk and staghorn. Bonaire seems to be far enough south to escape the stony coral disease, at least for now.

We didn't see too many lionfish, but there weren't a ton of invertebrates around. Plenty of mid-size fish, though. There was an eagle ray hanging around the shore dive area quite a bit, and we saw several octopus out and about during the day. We did one night dive, and were disappointed, however, as we saw very little. Shore diving is super-easy--jump off the dock or go down one of the two sets of stairs.

Some in the group had rental vehicles and did afternoon shore dives, or drove around the island, visiting the donkey sanctuary and the east coast.

Bonaire is one of our favorite places in the Caribbean--we will be back.
