Comments I carried a party of 8 to Bonaire over March 23-30. It was my second and last trip due to the rampant theft. Three years ago when my wife and I came, we had heard about this problem and it was apparent then. Most dive sites, particularly the remote ones, were covered with car window glass from break-ins. If anything, the problem has gotten worse, and maybe more dangerous. On this trip, the four guys in our party had a face-off with two cars of locals who followed us from Karpata to an unmarked site past the Bopac terminals, and then to Rincon--obviously intent on stealing our gear.

I discovered the "Bonaire Talk" website after I got back. There, I found that people in the Carib Inn, where we intended to stay, were robbed while we were in Bonaire, but staying in the Yacht Club Apartments. Then I found that someone was robbed in the Yacht Club Apartments 10 days before we got there. It seems obvious that thieves are moving from the easy car hits to rooms and, in our case in Rincon, audacity on the road. It is very hard for me to believe that the local authorities are helpless. It is much easier to believe that they are either involved or don't care because the tourists will be gone in a few days.

I am going to do my best to spread my feelings around several dive-oriented sites where I correspond. I have plenty of other good sites to refer people to without them being subjected to this mess. I am also notifying the U.S. State Department about the problem in hopes of having them issue a cautionary note to U.S. tourists.

A poster on the Bonaire Talk site suggested that posting complaints might alert someone on Bonaire that a tourist revolt could well result unless something is done. I am taking her suggestion. At this point I would NOT recommend Bonaire to anyone.
