Comments Little Cayman has been on the bucket list for a few years and got kicked down the beach courtesy of Covid. After getting back in the water in Bonaire for two weeks in 2021, we were able to reserve a spot at Pirates Point for a November 2022 trip.
Quite a number of reports on LC and don't want to be too redundant so here are a few humble observations:
Topside:
1) Susan and Michelle are doing a fantastic job in reconstituting their staff and business post-covid. As we gravitate to quieter, smaller, and more intimately maintained dive operations, we were splendidly pleased with our entire experience. The repeat customers were legion (15-20-25 times), and we were welcomed in as family even though on our first visit.
2) As with all service businesses, staff are the key. From new cooks Chelsea (from Jamaica) in the kitchen to new dive staff Gus (from Brazil), and the ever-lovable Dania (from heaven) who keeps the accommodations and a lot of other things squared away, everyone was simply pleasant, and customer focused. Understand that we are not high maintenance and often times like our peace and distance, but nonetheless, when you needed something, it appeared.
3) Pirates purchased a "new" dive boat (Falcon) which was completely refurbished and fitted with new engines (or zero time overhaul, I don't know the facts) but a gorgeous vessel in every regard. Measured 46*16 so you can imagine the space when there are a mere 8-10-12 divers aboard.
4) As the Falcon was delayed from an original delivery sometime in October, our group was treated to being the first divers to christen the boat on its new life with Pirates Point. What a pleasure!
5) While waiting for the Falcon, the kind folks at Southern Cross took us aboard for several days of diving under the highly capable hands of Captain Mike. A real pleasure and a real professional, running his boat by the numbers and really extending every courtesy to the Pirates divers. His white board drawings of the reef and dive briefings are among the most unique in the entire dive industry. We also had Captain Sherry one day and she likewise reflected the discipline and demeanor as Mikes mentoring shined through.
6) Its quiet here. You are on an island some 10 miles by 1 mile and a mere <200 full time population. You want to sleep in a hammock for three hours or smoke a cigar at 2AM gazing at the stars, welcome.
Bottomside:
1) Diving in the preserve was splendid. Only on one day did we seek the refuge of the southside due to wave conditions on the north.
2) The "BB Wall" is as advertised. Impressive. Reef sharks, turtles, rays, and lobster were seen routinely. Smaller pipefish, unique wrasses, and other critters were evident if you took the time to slow down and observe. Coral health was impressive.
3) I was diving in my new 5MM Bare as a personal research project; really not needed in 84-degree water but I did not overheat and for the first time ever, never had to wish I had a campfire burning in the thermoclines.
4) This wall is impressive. Dive it.
Misc:
1) Take some time to visit the Central Caribbean Marine Institute. The young students here are quite proud of their projects and constitute the future of our maritime playground, if there is to be one. Buy a t-shirt and take the tour.
2) The wonderful thing about LC is the small airport and the tetradactyl Otters of Cayman Airways which have rightfully established an unreliable reputation. Perhaps an enterprising entrepreneur will put a viable water taxi between LC and Cayman Brac, where the commercial airport can accommodate reliable air service.
3) The nice thing about LC is that it is limited in the number of visitors and hence somewhat self-regulating in terms of development and ruination driven by rampant exploitations. Read about the National Trust and have a nice day!!!!
