Comments I hate writing this review, because I'd rather keep this place a best kept secret!
Southern Cross is the perfect blend of a relaxed, low key Caribbean dive resort and a luxury vacation. It's a 'Goldilocks' spot - not too big and not too small. The rooms are spacious, clean to a fault, comfortable and well sited. (No TVs or phones - a true escape). The staff is unsurpassed by any other dive resort we've experienced; requests for minor items (like a brighter light bulb for reading) are addressed happily and quickly. You are addressed by name by everyone within the first day, and are casually asked if there is anything you need throughout your stay.
Oh, and the FOOD.... I have to say I was heartbroken that Pirate's Point closed since we loved the total experience of diving and fine dining on our stays there some years ago. No worries; the dining here is a 5-star elevated experience at every meal. Lots to choose from to suit all tastes, and they ask before arrival if there are diet requirements to accommodate.
The dive boats and staff are on par with the land base operation. The boats are well maintained and setup for easy diving and cameras. Briefings are thorough for both safety aspects of the dive and what you should hope to encounter at each site. The standard is 2 morning dives; several times a week there is an afternoon dive if enough folks want to go. Another option is a sundown dive a few evenings a week. (Until the channel lights are replaced, there are no night dives available). The dive guides are helpful if needed; once they are assured of your abilities you are able to go dive your dive with minimal oversight. They are fabulous for sharing finds with everyone if it's a small critter or special fish. The diving is still easy and relaxed here - no extreme challenges so it's well suited for all levels.
Our trip was also Cayman vacation time for turtles, it seems. We saw all varieties and sizes, and multiple turtles almost every day. Numerous sharks as well - one group caught sight of a hammerhead cruising the reef.
Alas, even Little Cayman is showing signs of environmental stress. The water was quite warm, even at some depth. The corals are not as healthy or lush and the teaming schools of all sizes of fish are not present as they were 10+ years ago. That said, the walls are still magnificent and you will still experience abundant fish as compared to other locations. Critter diving is quite good on the shallow dives. One diver found a Painted Elysia so small that it took a photo to identify it!
For non-diving time (is there such a thing?) the pool is clean and refreshing; there are kayaks and paddleboards to use in the large lagoon; hammocks are placed for reading and napping, and there is a stable of cruising bikes to ride around the island. The Little Cayman museum is worth a visit, and there are a few lovely little local shops along the path to and after the airstrip. (The booby pond has shrunk considerably due to the ongoing drought prior to our stay. We did see a baby booby in a nest, but only one). The resort bar, which is available for self-serve during the day, opens at 4 to share fish tales and pictures from the day.

If you're looking to have a variety of dive environments with no stress diving, and enjoy your land-based time as much as your diving, this is the place to go!

UW Photo Comments Dive partner has the camera - it was handed down on entry and collected on exit. Care was taken with all the cameras by the staff. Small table on the boat we dove allowed set up if needed. Usually just brought the camera back to the room after diving vs using the shore rinse.
