Comments The most depressing thing about returning to an area you've been to before is to find it's not what you remembered. About 15 years ago we cruised the Caymans and found diving in the Bloody Bay Wall area to be the most exciting and abundantly alive in the Caribbean. In 2006, after two days of diving from the lovely land-based operation of Southern Cross Club with a group of five, the talk on the boat and at meal times was rarely about the diving: there was nothing to talk about except the bad news. The reefs are in perilous condition, the fish life has diminished greatly and the night dive was eerily quiet. After a week we were thoroughly depressed. Although the staff and dive masters try valiantly to show guests a good time, they can't produce what isn't there. The weather was great; the water was warm (too warm for May) and sea conditions perfect. It's just that what we remembered as being something like swimming in an aquarium turned out to be more like one of those "underwater" restaurants of yesteryear where every now and then a turtle would swoop by.

I wished we'd known this before we went and I wish I knew what to do about it now.
