We dove the Catalina Islands off the northern coast of Guanacaste (the Nicoya penninsula). There are several departure destinations, but we chose Tamarindo. The dive operations offered pickup and drop-off service from and to local accommodations. We were taken to their small dive shop, where everyone was fitted for equipment. All gear was included in the price ($115 for a two tank trip). The dive group was then shuttled to a nearby beach and then tendered to the dive boat anchored offshore. The boat ride to the dive sites was about 45 minutes. Dives were generally shallow (40-60 feet) and approximately 40 minutes in duration. Drinks and snacks were provided between dives. The crew was adequate as divers and guides, pointing out interesting objects and marine life. The briefing was acceptable for experienced divers, although a lack of fluent English made things more challenging for less experienced divers (the owner is Italian and the crew is Tico). A mildly disturbing behavior was some interactions between male and female crew members. Nothing dangerous, just not a good look. |
