Comments We were a group of nine, all very experienced divers. Booking was done through Squba Holidays in Ontario and everything went smoothly, from picking up rental trucks to resort check in.
Rooms were clean, modern and spacious. However, showers in all the rooms could not contain water, resulting in a bathroom floor with ½ inch of water every time. Quite annoying, stacking up ALL our towels on the floor for every shower! There were also no phones in the room which made it a problem when trying to contact each other to coordinate dinner times etc. or call front desk. The onsite restaurants and bar were great.
We booked 6 days of 2x tank morning dives, out at 8:30 AM and back between noon and 1:00. The dive shop, rinse tanks, and lockers all adequate and set up nicely at the dock. (Shore diving tanks available 24/7 included in package) Nitrox was $8 per tank extra, but not available as they “didn’t have enough”. The shop said “you won’t need nitrox because all the dives were going to be shallow” Huh??? Their house reef was quite nice for afternoon shore dives and a night dive.
Staff and DM’s were helpful, however entire week was spoiled by wholly inferior dive boat. Apparently not their regular boat (“out for repairs”) it had only 8 tank holders, so all the extra tanks were stacked up all over the place. Also, the dock was so much higher than the boat, getting into it was dangerous and difficult, dropping down 3 feet off the dock onto a rocking boat was not ideal. Once on, there was very little room to gear up and safely walk to the dive platform. The dive ladder was tiny and not made for divers. Everyone had to flop down belly first onto the deck to exit the water, then struggle to stand up with all your gear on. After the 1st day we insisted they allow us to hand everything up, weights, tanks and fins, before climbing out, which did help. There was also no fresh water for rinsing yourself of salt between dives, let alone anything for rinsing cameras.
The boat was totally unsuited for diving.
Reefs appeared in good health, no sign of Stoney Coral Disease or bleaching, however almost all the dives were the same. No large fish or pelagics, but lots of little fish. Three turtles all week, one nurse shark and a sea horse. Group’s favourite site was “Mushroom Forest” which they took us to a second time when we requested. The dive shop had almost nothing for sale, no t-shirts, no spare parts, souvenirs etc.
It was a bit of a pain meeting all the Covid travel requirements, (pre-arrival testing, testing 72 hrs after arrival, pre-departure testing, plus all the new paperwork required) but arrangements were made ahead of time for onsite testing, and everything went rather smoothly. As for the resort, restaurants etc. there was little or no evidence of mask wearing inside anywhere. We visitors from Canada seemed to be the only ones wearing masks to go inside anywhere.
Overall, it was nice to be away diving again, and no regrets going to Curacao, it’s my third visit, but I would book something much further up the coast towards Westpunt to be closer to the best dive sites.
However I think I’ll move on and dive elsewhere when choosing my next Caribbean destination.
