Comments Took a 4 day trip to the Dominican Republic with my wife, and dived with Scuba Fun and stayed at Bayahibe Guest House on the recommendations of our son who did a similar trip at the start of 2022.
Flying direct to Punta Cana from Medellin, Colombia was a 3.5 hour trip, followed by a one hour taxi ride.
The next day I did two dives in the morning as the only diver, on the wreck of the Saint George and coco reef., both of which are a short boat ride away. There were about 15 other divers (mostly German) but they went elsewhere.
First dive was on the wreck, which was reasonably deep (max 37m) and was a good wreck dive. The ship was sunk deliberately as a dive wreck in 1999 following damage and abandonment in the harbour at Santa Domingo. Since the sinking time and tide has broken the ship across the middle, and the front half is scattered over the sea floor. The rear half however is surprisingly intact, with even the funnel standing. The remains of the wreck are upright, and include the propeller, rudder, gangways, capstan and interior, including the bridge. There was substantial soft coral growth but not much fish life.
After a half hour surface interval we did a second shallow dive on coco reef nearby, which was notable for various attempts to regrow coral, a couple of underwater statues, a seahorse, a barracuda, a stingray, but not much else.
On day two I was joined by another diver, and we did two shallow dives on Penol 1 and 2 reefs, which involved a longer boat trip. These were supposed to be the best reef dives around. The corals were mostly soft, with some new varieties for me. Fish life consisted of stings rays, a couple of small turtles, a frog fish, and common reef fish. Apart from one barracuda no big or pelagic fish about. The reefs were better than coco reef, but not world class.
