Comments Bula Vinaka! THE BEST! Beautiful resort that is really off the grid – minimal electricity. Most lighting done with solar LED and hurricane lamps. The summer is hot so they are adding ceiling fans. The stars on a clear night are incredible. The staff went above and beyond for all of us. Meals were of gourmet quality – always different and delicious! Every evening dinner was a different theme, including a traditional Fijian Feast with the Kava ceremony. Kava is not to be described - only remembered! Homemade breads daily! You are served family style – sitting at the table with your fellow guests. And each evening a member of the staff joins you for a meal. I was there during the low season (February) and there were only 5 guests. Perfect. We all got along wonderfully and had a ball. And – I was there when Cyclone Winston struck. The original path was to hit our southern island dead on at Cat. 5; however, a last minute course correction pushed her up to the northern Fiji islands and we only suffered high winds and pelting rain. But before we knew we were out of danger the staff organized all our transfers to higher ground with preparations to move us all into a concrete building if needed. This also affected travel plans for everyone and again the staff jumped in to offer every bit of assistance needed to get us information and reschedule flights.

Scuba diving was beautiful. Unfortunately due to weather the viz was usually low. Lots of plankton in the water. Even so, the coral formations are outstanding. We were not able to dive outside the reef to see the Manta Rays (again, very rough water due to coming storm) but diving inside the reef was great. Any diving in Fiji is great!

If you are looking for a Sandals or Hilton vacation, this is probably not the place for you. But if you want to feel like you've really visited Fiji, and get to know the people and the culture, you cannot do better than Matava. Thank you for an unforgettable holiday!
