Comments This was my tenth cruise aboard the Nai'a, my favorite liveaboard. I'm a big-time fish geek, and continue to find new fish species while diving familiar sites, as well as hitting a few new sites each trip.

Eight months ago Cyclone Winston hit central Fiji pretty hard, and in some places destroyed corals as much as 100 feet deep. Since then the Nai'a has carefully picked dive sites that were spared by the storm. Since most of us on this charter had been on the Nai'a before, we asked to revisit some old favorites that they had been avoiding. It's good to check occasionally and see what conditions are like. Some bommie tops that were cleared by the storm are already dotted with table coral colonies a few inches across. A couple of sites they just noted to check again in six months. But most of the places we dived were great, full of the colorful soft corals, table corals, and clouds of anthias and fusiliers that Fiji is known for.

This trip the currents were unusually calm, even on sites that usually have a lot of current. While this made for easy diving, it also reduced the visibility and produced fewer pelagics.

UW Photo Comments The Nai'a has an excellent set-up for photographers, with a large camera room right off the dive deck. The crew are very experienced in handling camera rigs and move them between the dive deck and the skiffs for you.
