Comments I was surprised to see a second trip report from the same author on Undercurrent regarding the Nai’a trip of 23 February. I then realised it was in fact their open response to a private email from Rob Barrel (the boat’s owner) responding to their first report. I would have thought it more appropriate to answer such an email privately, particularly as we were not party to Rob Barrel’s questions nor to his possible explanations. An email of constructive suggestions might have been more useful than a second public report that largely hammers home overly-critical points from the first.

Personally, I found nothing wrong with the comfort of the saloon nor with the alleged precariousness of the stairs; I have seen much worse on other liveaboards. For an old boat, I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, perfectly well-equipped and very spacious. The point about the shaded sundeck was probably valid but was sorted out by the crew as soon as the issue was raised; just as the crew consistently strived at all times to comply with our individual requests and to ensure we had an enjoyable and comfortable trip.

As to the political issues raised, I certainly never had any impression of unrest among the crew. Whatever their current employment situation, they presented a united and friendly front – as is appropriate – to the guests. I do not believe guests should become involved with boat/crew politics and even return passengers may not properly understand the dynamics. In any event, these are private matters that should not result in hearsay and gossip among guests, and certainly should not be aired on a diving forum as gospel truth.

No liveaboard is going to be perfect but my experience of the Nai’a was that the positives far outweigh any petty negatives. I have been on many liveaboards all over the world, and I would highly recommend Nai’a and would absolutely do it again. I am also happy to answer any questions about my experience of our trip.
