Comments We took a chance and booked a trip to Paradise during the end of the rainy season (mid-March), and we lucked out. The previous week's weather had been rainy and windy but we had terrific conditions.

Getting to Taveuni and Paradise is a bit of a schlep. After a relatively easy 11-hour flight from LAX to Nadi, Fiji's international airport, we took a 75-minute flight to Taveuni. The tiny Taveuni airport would not be a comfortable place to spend much time; luckily, that wasn't necessary as our driver was waiting when we arrived. Paradise is at the opposite end of the island from the airport, so a bumpy, hour-long ride on sometimes-unpaved roads followed.

The diving, especially on the Rainbow Reef, lived up to the hype, with abundant and colorful soft coral, huge coral bommies, and many kinds of tropical fish. The timing was right to see the Great White Wall with the coral extended and the dive staff did a great job of managing the groups, since not everyone had AOW and could go down to 95+ feet where the white coral starts. Dive briefings were detailed and easy to understand. The sizeable boat was not full during our stay, so it was easy to get geared up without knocking into people. (There is a second, smaller boat that was not needed for the number of people diving during our stay.)

This isn't the place if you're super focused on bigger marine life; I think we saw one shark, some eagle rays and a few turtles. On our non-diving day before we left, the divers saw a manta--lucky them! The variety of fish was impressive. Twice, our boat was accompanied by a pod of playful dolphins, which was delightful.

The food was quite good, with only a few exceptions. There was fresh fish every day, prepared in different ways, and lots of island produce such as pineapple and cassava. A meat kabob was a bit tough, as was a pork chop. We didn't try the more western-type dishes like pizza and pasta. There was always lots of fresh fruit at breakfast, and an on-site bakery made quick breads that were served during the surface interval.

I came to Paradise with my daughter and her boyfriend, so we stayed in a "family bure," which had two bedrooms and a bathroom, plus a large outdoor shower. I would have preferred more privacy between the two bedrooms--no door separated the bedrooms--but families with younger children may well feel differently. The staff kept the rooms immaculate. One day, an afternoon rain dislodged the shampoo, conditioner, and their rack from their spots in the outdoor shower; by the time we returned to the room an hour or two later, staff had put everything back in its place.

Last, but definitely not least, the resort staff were, to a person, friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure our needs were met and knew our names shortly after we arrived.
