Comments Trip Report: Fiji, Volivoli Resort and Ra Divers

In November, 2022 we spent a brief six days at Volivoli Resort in Fiji.

We dove using the on-site dive shop, Ra Divers. The default style from Volivoli is to do two-tank boat dives, leaving in the morning. The rides from the beach to the dive sites are usually in the 10-20 minute range, depending on what sites have been selected. (The walk from your room to the beach is about 3 minutes.) Ra Divers also offered night dives and had flexibility in both scheduling and destinations; you could request a three-tank ride, for example. When we first arrived, there were only a few divers at the resort, so things were casual and easygoing. However, the second day a group of 35 divers had arrived and this really stretched the capacity of the dive shop. Our little group of four divers had to shift to afternoon dives so that the shop could concentrate on the large group.

Diving was very good. Visibility was in the 30 to 40 foot range, with water temperatures an almost constant 82 degrees. We didn’t run into any real currents and entering and exiting the water was easy (although varied based on what size boat we were on, which changed every day). Hard and soft corals were abundant and healthy, and small reef fish common. Fish larger than about 6 inches were rare: we saw a total of one Titan triggerfish and only a handful of parrotfish during our diving days. Dive time was limited to 60 minutes, and Nitrox was available. Each dive had a guide and we were told we could stick with the guide or navigate ourselves.

Although the dive shop is technically separate from the rest of the resort, there are not any other good options for shore/boat diving in Rakiraki, so if you want to dive from Volivoli, Ra Divers is your only choice. Ra Divers is on-site attached to the resort right on the water, with some office space, a large shaded area with tables, and rinse tanks and drying area. There is no dock, so boats are either brought in close enough to the beach to wade out or divers are shuttled out, depending on the tide.

Overall, the whole Volivoli+Ra Divers experience counts as very good, but not fantastic. Everyone was nice and wanted to be helpful, very much so, but almost everything in the resort, including Ra Divers, was just a little disorganized some of the time. Throughout our stay, we would be told one thing, but then something else would happen (or not happen, as the case may be). This was true for the dive shop and for the resort both. There were no major problems, but if you pick Volivoli---and this is not to discourage you in any way; it was a great trip---make sure that you double-check everything every day and don’t assume that anything someone tells you is necessarily going to happen.

Photographers will be very pleased with the dedicated table space for them: a locked-at-night building with about 12 stations, ventilation, and good lighting, each with power and compressed air available.

If you go with a relaxed attitude and willingness to be flexible, you should easily be able to enjoy yourself and have some good dives. Based on what we saw, I would not consider this part of Fiji a “must go” for diving, though. That’s not a comment on the operation or the resort, but the reefs, which also fell into the “very good, but not fantastic” category. We haven’t done other Fiji diving, but I would guess that more remote locations (a flight or ferry ride away) might have more interesting reefs. It’s also possible that Ra Divers has better sites but didn’t take us there.

Some other miscellaneous notes: the restaurant was the one “wow” outstanding part of our whole stay, with the food service staff taking a real effort to help us pick best dishes (and making a special dish for us one night) and to make us feel at home. The resort has a pool and day spa as well. Door-to-door from Fiji’s Nadi (NAN) airport van service is about 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 hours, depending on traffic. Internet service is not free, but there is good cell service at Volivoli if you have an international plan. We paid about $3,000 for one couple for four nights in a large ocean view villa (with air conditioning, kitchen, and a large porch), airport transfers, all meals, and three 2-tank boat dives. Less expensive rooms are available.
