Comments Not sure if this qualifies as a “dive” report, but I’ll give it a stab anyway. A friend of ours reached out to us and asked, would we be interested in swimming with humpback whales. Who could resist that kind of invitation?

So we packed our bags and looked at what paperwork we would need to visit French Polynesia in the era of Covid. The keyword here is “paperwork.” I haven’t had to schlep this much actual paper since we went to Budapest before the collapse of the Soviet Empire.

We were tested, probed, poked and our temperatures measured before finally being on our way to Tahiti. Once at the airport we were tested once again. Afterwards we spent the night at the Airport Hotel. The flight schedules seem designed to make sure you spend some money locally before heading out to your final destination, in our case, Moorea.

I have to say I felt more comfortable in Moorea than in many parts of Californian in terms of Covid protocols.

Moorea is a 40-minute ferry ride from Tahiti, we could see the island from our hotel room. Once there we checked into the Hotel Kaveka. If you are looking for thick terry robes in your room and hot rock massages, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for an old school romantic vacation hotel, this could be it.

Did I mention the friendly service, great food and a tidy room? They were also more than happy to arrange for car rentals, taxis, whatever we wanted. We headed out every morning at 7:00 and returned around 4:00 to 4:30, so terry robes and exotic massages were not in the cards anyway. After all day on or in the water we rarely stayed up "late."

The WIFI was OK and they helped us pack a lunch every morning, providing “takeout boxes” so that we could make sandwiches and bring some of the excellent fresh fruit. This was from the morning buffet by the way.

We had some stunning interactions with whales and that was really what we were there for. It’s not the cheapest trip we have done, but the food was great, the people extremely friendly and swimming with whales, was for us a lifetime bucket list experience.
