This was my second trip to the Galapagos Islands. Due to my long bucket list, and limited time for dive trips I rarely go back to the same location. However, the Galapagos are truly a unique experience. Darwin’s Arch was as amazing as the first time I was there in 2005. Great for large pelagics: At least 14 whale sharks, many hammerheads and Galapagos sharks, turtles. Currents are strong especially at the north islands of Wolf and Darwin. Diving at Wolf we encountered currents coming at us from two different directions causing a washing machine effect. It wasn’t fun. Other highlights included diving with marine iguanas and penguins. Other unique species included red lip batfish, scorpions. We booked a second week on the sister ship Eric to explore the islands topside. Definitely well worth the added time and expense. The islands are as unique as the diving is. The crew of the Sky was superb. They provided the best service of any dive boat I have ever been on. Almost the entire crew would be on deck helping people gear up. And after the dives you were greeted with hot towels, water and snacks. Crew members would help you with your wet suits and wash your gear for you. Nitrox and 100 CF tanks are available on request. The sixteen divers were split into two groups. All diving from Pangas (zodiacs). The two dive masters would alternate between the two groups. Both were excellent tour guides and very safety conscious. Rooms on board were adequate. Food good. Wine and beer complimentary. Rough passages between islands had a few people skipping dinner. Bring plenty of seasick medicine (whatever works for you). The Eric was of a similar design as the Sky, but smaller rooms (10 vs 8 on the Sky), which were cramped. Crew was good but not as customer focused as on the Sky. Land tours we very interesting. We observed a sealion giving birth. Animals are unafraid of people so it was easy to approach the mother and cub. |
