Comments Both my wife & I planned a month long trip to Ecuador spending a significant amount of time in Galapagos and chose to dive with The Humboldt Explorer primarily based upon the reviews I read in Undercurrent. We had previously been on about a half dozen liveaboards most recently the Dewi Nusantara in Raja Ampat several months prior to boarding the Humboldt. We were not expecting the first class operation that was the Dewi, but also not expecting the disappointment associated with our Humboldt experience. From the condition of the ship to the food to the dive guides, even our minimal expectations were not fulfilled.Hardly any of the crew spoke English other than the head dive guide who took ill after the 2nd day. The bartender(busboy)
then had the additional duties of one of the only two dive guides.
While the diving, especially at Darwin and Wolf was as expected and by and large very good, we couldn't help but wonder whether we had stumbled upon a particularly poor crew or there was a significant deterioration in the operation since other reviews.
Bolstering our opinion were some other fellow passengers who had similar opinions.
That being said a trip to the Galapagos should not be missed although if a liveaboard is on the wish list as well I could not recommend the Humboldt Explorer.
We also spent a few weeks traveling the Ecuador countryside and the scenery, food and inhabitants were truly fantastic, so all was not lost.Feel free to contact me for further details.
