Comments My first time with (a) Virgin and a hotel named Mermaid – would this be a good omen for a lovely vacation and awesome dives? Had chosen Carriacou where I had been on a package deal with Tobago and Grenada in 2011. I felt it had potential, I especially loved sister island with it´s beautiful reef sloping down. With good advice from Racquel Deefer this time I booked all parts of the trip myself, flights accommodation, ferry etc. It´s adventure and challenge but you can actually save money when you are free to pick from the flights they offer. A travel agent will not tell you there is a cheaper flight only 4 days prior to your schedule. Chose Deefer which in 2011 was still run by a German couple. Deefer warned “technically it´s off season”. On Facebook they had shown some dive when it was pouring, others around sisters and the jetty teeming with fish life.
On my way I stopped in Grenada St George for 2 nights in a guesthouse to then catch the early Osprey ferry to C. Being in the Caribbean I imagined myself in a nice restaurant with a Pina Colada waiting for a lovely meal. This wasn´t to be the case, even on C, as most of the restaurants were closed, some didn´t even exist anymore. My Mermaid hotel had a lovely room and even better beach right in front, but they didn´t or couldn´t serve any meals at all, maybe due to Beryl or lack of employees. Since starvation wasn´t an option, every day I walked the streets to find a local place to grab some food. Some days it would only be chicken wings and chips or pork stew with rice. pls note: the $ is 1.16 to the €, my fault they do a lot of lionfish spearing, which I don't favour and told them
