Comments This was a transition trip for the Raja Ampat Aggressor. They were moving the boat from Raja Ampat to the Derawan Islands. There are two 12 day charters to cover the distance. I did the first which was from Sorong to Lembeh. The following charter travels from Lembeh to the Derawan Islands. They do the reverse in the fall.

This location has an incredible amount of sea life both in numbers and variety. Most of the life here is on the small side. We did see a few sharks and a couple of mantas at a distance but for the most part, large pelagic were rare. There was a massive amount of smaller sea life and this location is great for macro photography. As we traveled west we saw a gradual increase in soft coral that supplemented the large variety of hard coral typically seen in Raja Ampat. The final two days were spent muck diving in the Lembeh straight. When in Lembeh, the boat hired a local dive guide that was very familiar with the area. This proved to be very valuable as he found critters that I would have never found.

The boat and crew were excellent. Food was plentiful and very good. Breakfast was off of a menu, followed by a buffet lunch, and a gourmet dinner every night.

Diving is done from rigid inflatables and we always had a dive guide. Camera tables are located both inside and outside. 110v and 220v are available inside. The dive deck is spacious with wet and dry storage bins.

The transition trip is a great way to get a lot of dives in (I did 37) and see a large variety life.

A safety briefing was conducted shortly after boarding the boat. Life jackets and fire extinguishers are located in each cabin as well as the Muster Station (dive deck). Glow-in-the-dark placards indicate life jacket locations and arrows on the baseboards indicating the escape route. Battery charging is not allowed in cabins, only in specified locations. A night watchman is on duty at all times.

Travel notes: Because it is such a remote location, putting the airfare on one ticket is difficult. I separated the airfare into three separate tickets. Round trip from my home to Singapore, then a one way ticket from Singapore to Sorong, and then a one way ticket Mando to Singapore for the start of the return. I spent a night in Singapore each way and one night in Sorong prior to boarding the boat. This helped adjust to the time change and allowed for potential flight delays. There are three hotels at the Singapore airport, one airside and two landside. You never need to leave the airport, unless you want to.
