Comments My buddy and I visited Alam Batu in January of 2024 with a group organized by Kerri and Hergen of Subculture Travel. While I have been to Villa Markisa, which is in the same general area, a number of times in the past this was my first visit to Alam Batu. Alam Batu is about 3 hours by car from the Denpasar airport. You let them know what incoming flight you are on and they organize the transfer for you.

The resort is on spacious grounds with a number of cottages, an infinity pool, and plenty of shady places to relax and enjoy the ocean view. The A/C in our cottage worked great. The food was good and plentiful. Meals were served on the typical dive schedule. There was a small early breakfast before diving where you also ordered what you wanted for the full breakfast served after the first dive. Lunch was served after the second dive. There was a short break after lunch followed by the third dive. Before dinner we either did a night dive or got together for a social hour.

The dive gear-up area and camera rooms were adjacent to the dining room. There was plenty of space to hang up your gear and to sit down and put it on. The dock and entry for shore dives was down a set of steps from the gear-up area. The staff carried cameras, BC’s, etc. down to the boat for you. I will note that the shore was rocky so take hard-soled booties for the shore dives. Everyone is required to do a shore dive as a check-out before getting on the boat. Also, night dives were generally done from the shore.

Except for the check-out dive where there was a thermocline and perhaps one other dive the water was very warm (from 86 to 88 F). I wore a 3 mm wetsuit and wished I had my 1 mm. Essentially all the diving was muck. The dive guides were good at finding stuff for us to photograph. We saw a wide variety of nudis, lots of baby frogfish, harlequin shrimp, tiger shrimp, and a yellow rhinopias that could be reliably found at about 95 feet on one site. That said, on my previous trips to the area there were higher numbers of everything. I think the warm water had driven a lot of the creatures to deeper depths. I look forward to returning when the water is cooler.

UW Photo Comments There were 2 camera rooms. One small one was just off the gear-up area and the larger one was up a set of stairs from the gear-up area. Both had power strips and a light for each station. Battery charging was done in the camera rooms which were a significant distance from the cottages so there was no worry about a potential fire while we were sleeping. The staff carefully carried the cameras to the boat.
