Comments Manokwari-Sorong, 10 nights.

Two mornings with whale sharks in Teluk Wasoi. Up to six at once. Close. Every imaginable view angle. I had seen whales sharks previously in Galapagos and Cocos, but this was a very different experience.

Excellent to Outstanding reef sites between Teluk Wasoi and Manokwari, between Manokwari and Sorong, and in Dampier Strait. Outstanding soft corals, gorgonians, and sponges. Outstanding coral diversity. Pygmy seahorses. Ghost pipefish. Wobeggong sharks. Endemics.

Efficient dive operations.

Outstanding accommodations and food.

Outstanding overall. Recommended.

Things that could/should have been done better:
(1) There were no dives on the main WWII wrecks in Manokwari (Shinwa Maru and Cross Wreck), despite their listing as dive sites on the Dewi Nusantara Webpage.
(2) There was no stop at the Leatherback Turtle nesting site between Manokwari and Sorong, despite arriving at the peak of the Leatherbnack nesting season, and despite listing on the Dewi Nusantara Webpage.
(3) There was no visit to a Bird of Paradise site in Cenderawasih Bay, despite listing on the Dewi Nusantara Webpage and confirmation from the Dewi Nusantara office.
(4) There was only one land excursion on trip (brief visit to village).
(5) The rental gear was less than first rate.

Other:
Air connections were Jakarata-Makassar-Manokwari and Sorong-Makassar-Jakarta.
Added 3-night Makassar-Rantepao-Makassar excursion before cruise for cultural tourism in Tana Toraja. Arranged through Dodo Mursalim. Recommended.
Added added 2-night Manokwari-Arfak Mountain-Manokwari excursion for birding in West Papua (Vogelkop Bowerbird, Magnificent Bird of Paradise, and Westerm Parotia Bird of Paradise). Arranged through Charles Roring. Recommended.
