Comments Sanur is full of PADI 5 star diver operators so how to choose? I can't vouch for the others only for the outstanding service from and experience diving with Indo-Diving. Most days we had one to one or one to two divemaster to diver ratios, often a boat to ourselves. Even my wife who snorkeled from the same boat had a one to one divemaster to accompany her. Food provided was very good, the transport was in reasonably modern Toyota vans, the kit was in good condition and the diving was out of this world. Mantas, sharks, an unbelievable variety of fish and fabulous visibility. The only downside was being prepared for the cold water, especially out at Nusa Penida, In September you will need a min 5mm full plus ideally a gilet over the top. Tulamben was warmer, maybe 22-24C, as was Padangbai and 5mm was ok.
Tulamben is a 2.5 hr drive from Sanur and comprises a tricky shore entry with some waves and awkward large rounded rocks in place of a beach making balance challenging but the dive is worth the effort, heavily encrusted with corals and teeming with fish the wreck is a must-see for anyone diving Bali.
Nusa Penida is colder and requires a 45min fast and sometimes choppy boat ride across the straights from Sanur but the diving is amazing, viz not as good as Bali side, maybe just 20m rather than 30+ in Padangbai and Tulamben but the Manta's at Manta Point, 28-29m depth, are majestic and you are 90% sure of seeing them on every dive. Not so the Mola Mola, that is more a 1 in 10 chance and we didn't see any in three dives looking for them. The second dive was in a cove at Crystal Bay just 10mins from the first but with variable currents and wildly fluctuating temperatures. It was crowded too and the corals had been damaged by storms. Sakenan also out at Nusa and typically the third dive of the day it's a gorgeous drift dive along the coast, over shallow beautiful corals and an amazing density of marine life.
Padangbai comprised two dives, approx 24-25m but with limited current and good viz - White Sand Beach and Jepun. Plenty of small white tip sharks, turtles, shoals of sweet lips dozens of stingrays. Great food served in the local restaurants and only a one hour drive from Sanur.
