Comments The Lembeh Straits are a must dive location for divers who are interested in, and have experienced, many coral reefs around the world. Once such a diver reaches a point that s/he has a comfortable feeling about the huge diversity of organisms found in the marine environment, a visit to Lembeh opens a whole new world of diversity! On the muck dives that will be done there, such a diver will have pointed out to him/her organisms which cannot be distinguished between animal/plant or vertebrate/invertebrate. By some, this location has been considered to be the “muck diving/critter diving capital of the world.”

As a measure of the popularity of this location for divers, there was only one dive resort there in the early 1990s – now there are likely 60 to 90 with several live aboard dive boats. A significant contributor and attraction to the diversity found there is the high diversity of octopus-related cephalopods. There are probably 25-plus different species, likely more than may be found in any other location around the world. Many divers go there just to see the mimic octopus and wunderpus which are rare in other places.

The Critters at Lembeh Resort ([lembehresort.com link]) is part of a 3-venue complex in northern Sulawesi containing the Murex Resort which, I believe, was the first dive resort in that part of the world.
I have stayed and dived with The Critters at Lembeh Resort a half dozen times and couldn’t recommend it more highly. The resort, the diving, the dive operation, the dive masters, the underwater photo facilities, the critter diversity, the lodging, the staff, the food and the camaraderie are exquisite! BTW, this makes a convenient stopover location for those venturing eastward to dive Raja Ampat and vicinity.

Alert: Marty Snyderman and Ned/Anna DeLoach. Please research and write an article on the pygmy sea dragon I saw there two weeks ago. That has to be the smallest vertebrate animal living on this earth!
