Comments If you have the time and money to do it, Wakatobi Dive Resort is probably the best place I've been to for diving from both a content (what you see), conditions, service and value. I can't wait to go back. Bottom line, the staff on the down low said January and February they get waves and not so great viz, and they are very busy from July through December, so they recommended March through June. I was there in June and confirm it was wonderful.

Getting there is the challenge. You have to get to Bali and since the resort flight departs at about 8am you have to come the day before and spend the night in Bali. There is a hotel connected to the airport, so its easy if you use that. The resort meets you at the gate in Bali and helps you check in to the airport hotel. Then they meet you in the hotel lobby the next money to get you to the 80 seat prop plane the resort charters for the 2 hour flight to Wakatobi. Both ways the turboprop flights were the smoothest flights I can recall. One or both of the resort owners (two brothers) usually greet each flight. There are 2 flights per week each way. This limits your date options to 7, 10, 14 days etc. Not a big deal, just an interesting note. The return is the same, but in reverse. The resort flight gets in to Bali late afternoon so I had to burn another night at the hotel airport. Burning two nights at an airport hotel might have been the biggest negative on this trip.

The resort is small and totally focused on divers. It's not cheap but everything is included except booze. Only one restaurant but they mix up the menu every day and I never got bored. The resort is small so its never crowded and no reservations required. The staff will know your name by the end of the first day. The pathways are made of this white local stone that doesn't get hot in the sun. You can walk barefoot on the stone at 3pm and its comfortable.

The dive boats are enormous wooden junk like vessels. I had a private dive guide who pampered the hell out of me, but even those who shared a guide never had more than a couple other guests with them. Hot towels in between dives, full bathroom on every boat, nice ladders to get back on board and they are happy to take your bc and gear before you get out of the water. They leave promptly at 730am, but come back to the resort in between most dives so you can do any of the 5 dives they run per day.

Average dive time is 70 minutes, but I did plenty of 80 minute dives. They are happy to let you do your thing. The coral was computer generated perfection. Tons and tons of healthy coral with more types than I've ever seen before (though I haven't been to Raj Ampat yet or indeed any liveaboard) and I could probably go there a hundred times and be happy. Tons of fish swarms and tropical color fish, but not a lot of big animals. That's ok for me, but those passionate for pelagics would have been disappointed at least on this trip.

Overall, just awesome.
