Comments After a pandemic-induced absence, I returned to Wakatobi for the 7th time, half-expecting a less than stellar trip because of Covid issues. None presented themselves. Masks were necessary, but not always worn by everyone in the airports, until we reached the resort, where no masking was the rule. There was an inordinate amount of rain for the first five days (June 24-29) but then the weather was perfect. The entire staff was its usual efficient, outgoing, always helpful self. Food was immaculately prepared, varied, and delicious. Diving could not have been better, with some personal firsts for me (crinoid shrimp, 1" lobster, moray being cleaned, eel larva, pygmy cuttlefish, eagle rays, turtles with remoras) and the usual (bumphead parrotfish, rays, octopus, squid, nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, tons of butterflies/triggers/anthias, healthy corals, excellent visibility). Many dives were only the guide and 1-2 divers, so it was never crowded. Wakatobi is remarkable for many things, but frequently unstated is its smooth running. If the boat is supposed to leave at 7:15, it does! I really appreciate that efficiency. For an elderly diver (I'm 76), the boat staff is extremely helpful with the gear, exiting and re-entering the boat, removing fins and bcd at the boat ladder, towel, and warm, scented washcloth after each dive, and getting everything else right. Briefings are excellent and safety is paramount.
