Comments Boat was great and crew was wonderful but I left wondering why Maldives diving is rated so highly.

The Good:
-The boat and crew were amazing, near perfect in fact.
-Whale Sharks. The crew found us several Whale Sharks and got us several very close encounters...I had to get out of the way more than once! Being that close to a Whale Shark made the trip for me.
-Cleanliness. The boat was clean, of course, but so was the airport, hotels, and restaurants. (note that beaches are not listed here...see below)

The Bad:
-Water clarity! I was expecting >100 ft and never saw anything anywhere close to that. I wish I knew the reason...were we on the wrong side of the Atoles? Was it just a bad week? Is it just not as good as advertised? It was disappointing to say the least.
-Coral is dead!! I heard there was a bleaching event in the 1990s but never expected what I saw. I would say that easily 90% of the reef was dead. It was sad.
-Trash. I didn't see very much trash on the reef but there is a ton on the beaches and I mean a ton!!

Overall, we did see some very cool stuff (ghost pipe fish, leaf fish, manta, whale shark, etc) but with the combination of the poor water clarity and dead coral I wouldn't recommend Maldives as a dive destination.
