Comments To begin the boat, The Ocean Sapphire, is advertised as being equal to the Conde Max or the Duke of York which we were originally scheduled on. This is simply not the case. The boat crew itself was unengaged and appeared uninterested in the group traveling with them, they rarely spoke to us, were never introduced ( not even the captain) and disappeared entirely when not task with a job such as helping clients down a ladder. Which , by the way was the way to get on the diving dhoney. As an older diver, climbing up and down a ladder to the main boat, while at sea, was not the easiest and little assistance was offered. Ever. In fact on of the crew kindly took my dive torch to free my hands for the ladder and then dropped it into the sea… no attempt at recompense was offered.
On that same issue, despite several notices to the travel agency, the boat, paperwork etc prior to the trip that we had food allergies and were vegetarian there was limited food options. I personally asked about it, and was told “well there is fruit…” ok true, but fruit only for a week… I have never experienced such a lack of concern for a client on any other dive boat. I can tell you I had peanut butter toast for breakfast no other options, and rice and steamed cabbage/cauliflower for diner most nights. This was NOT what my dollars were paid for.
The rooms were small, the beds were hard and uncomfortable, and the AC leaked. The first room we were in there was a leak coming from the ceiling light , when brought to the attention of the crew they came to repair it, but it continued to leak( FROM the LIGHT FIXTURE!) We were moved to another larger room, but the AC there also leaked into a series of shelving cubicles making them completely unusable. There was a constant smell of fuel as well making me think the air circulation was compromised.
The decks were ringed with a low railing but any opening such as the one we used to climb down to the dhoney for diving were left completely open at all times even when underway.
Perhaps the biggest issue is that of fire safety. Most of the cabins where in the hold of the ship, there was no escape hatch -there had been one at one time but it was sealed shut. None of the portholes were large enough to escape through, making the only escape route via the one set of stairs to the main deck. At the top of the steps is the kitchen. So had there been a fire either below or at the kitchen level, everyone below would have died trapped. When asked about it the dive crew would shrug their shoulders and say “This is not our boat so we have no say”.
On the note of fire safety, there was a limited dive briefing at the start of the trip that may have talked about lithium battery charging etc but it was in Italian… the six English speakers got a very short brief that did not include anything about fire safety, extinguishers, emergency procedure etc. There was no safety briefing on the dhoney…
In short this is not a safe boat.
The dive crew however were great. They took care of us well, gave great briefings in both languages and showed us everything under the water we could have asked to see and were one hundred percent customer oriented. They did take the time to say they were sorry about some of the things on the boat but always with the caveat that “It isn’t our boat…”.
In a perfect world I would get to do this trip over with the same Dive crew but on a safe luxurious ship such as what I had originally paid for... alas that is probably not going to happen.
