Comments My husband and I went to Rhodes for a wedding and thought we would try one day of diving in the Mediterranean. We had heard there wasn't much sea life there, but hoped that clear water and perhaps interesting terrain would be worth it. We were very disappointed - there was virtually NO life at all. No fish, no corals. There was a swim through on the 2nd dive, however, we couldn't enjoy it because the group was full of students and/or very new divers who made it ahead of us and kicked up the sand. There just wasn't anything to see.

This operator was also disappointing. One positive is that they sent a driver to pick us up at our hotel, which was a nice surprise. However, we then had to wait at the pier while they picked up other divers! After hanging around the pier for an hour, we finally took off in the boat. Apparently it was their first run of the whole year because we were informed that yes, the boat had a head, but no, we couldn't use it because they hadn't set it up. What???? We were far and away the most experienced divers in the group and some people were actually students, and only one DM/instructor went down with us. There was not much seating on the boat, we finally stretched out on the bow. They did have good rental gear which appeared almost new.

In the end, we chalked it up to practice before our next, bigger trip.

Unfortunately Heather's experience in the Med is not unique as most coastal marine life has long been absent from coastal and near coastal waters for a very, very long time, thanks in large part to the fact that the Med is not much more than a lake, bordered by some of the most industrialized nations in the world, coupled with decades of overfishing.

The Western Mediterranean is very different from the Aegean, Adriatic and Eastern Med.
