Comments The Revillagigedo/Socorro diving was excellent. On almost every dive at San Benedicto we experienced large oceanic mantas. On some dives there were up to 10 which circled us repeatedly in close up lengthy encounters. The mantas were joined by small groups of dolphins who hung around and added to the great show. We had brief encounters with 2 small whale sharks and a quick look at a few big hammerheads. Sea conditions at Roca Partida were difficult so we only had 1 day there and less pelagic action than expected. It is however a truly beautiful spot with huge schools of fish, lots of tunas. We did not see hammerheads there.
The 22+ hour boat trip each way from Cabo makes this not for everyone. We had high winds and choppy seas which resulted in some members of the group being regularly sea sick. This was compounded by Southern Sport which is not a good boat. The website says it is a new boat but this is not accurate. The main eating sitting area has no windows. The rooms are extremely small…the upper bunk measured 13 inches from mattress to ceiling…my roommate could not sleep in the room. There was no comfortable outdoor seating…the roof deck was very top heavy in feel and rocking dramatically from side to side.
The crew were courteous, helpful and the dive guides excellent. The food was good, fresh and plentiful but eating each meal in the windowless galley was almost depressing.
Avoid the Southern Sport!
The Socorros were worthwhile and several members of the group had been there in winter during whale season and said it was extraordinary.
Several of us who had also dove the Cocos unanimously preferred the Cocos so if you are comparing I'd recommend Cocos first…both have the long roundtrip cruises, Cocos more dive sites, more overall life, one location versus the lengthy moves between the Reviallagigedos.
