Comments This was the second year that I volunteered with the Oceanic Society to engage in shark and reef monitoring in Palau. Our shark data went to the Micronesia Shark Foundation. Both 2018 and 2019 were identical dates the end of June. In 2020 we are returning during shark week the beginning of March. In 2018 the weather was sunny and calm every day. Besides sharks and indicator fish, we did 50 meter transects along various reefs. In 2019 there was lots of wind and rain so we mostly stayed on walls and didn’t monitor the reefs. One of the indicator fish we were interested in was groupers. In 2019 on one dive we stopped counting when the number exceeded 200! Because there often are strong currents, we stayed together as a group so that the dive master could release a marker buoy for the boat to find us and avoid other boats. We used reef hooks at blue corner to hold our position while we watched the shark action.
The diving in Palau is mostly not difficult, but because of the need for good buoyancy control and dealing with strong currents, I would not recommend the dives for beginners.
Palau is a declared shark sanctuary. The country’s economy relies on dive tourism; consequently, there is a strong emphasis on maintaining a healthy underwater environment. The dive masters are wonderful and caring.
