Comments We were on a group trip to Bohol with our Boston-area dive shop May 13-25. Travel logistics were generally smooth, although SFO layovers when traveling from BOS seem to be on the long side. We flew business class on Philippine airlines….always great to have more room on a 14-hour flight, although the PA planes are older and not the lay flat beds you find on Qatar or Emirates. Immigration in Manila was relatively painless, another 1.5-hour flight to Bohol and then a 2-hour van ride to Amun Ini, located on the eastern side of Bohol on the Anda peninsula.

The resort is secluded and beautiful, with very comfortable rooms - huge bathrooms and very comfortable beds and a veranda. Mini-split AC units in each room kept things very comfortable. Perhaps the best physical feature of the rooms were the individual hot water heaters each room had.

Meals were in the open-air dining area just a few hundred feet from the rooms. I can’t say enough about the staff in the dining room – they all learned our names immediately, learned what we liked, and were very attentive. We ordered from the menu during the previous meal….and within minutes of arriving at each meal, our food was delivered in front of us – amazing with a large group who sat randomly at every meal (20+ people). Menu selections were mainly western-oriented with healthy portions, some seafood and often a daily seafood special for dinner. We were definitely not hungry on this trip.

Our large group (all on Nitrox) kept the dive operation busy, but they did a great job keeping us supplied with gas and keeping the trains/boats running on time. Boats were boarded via ramp from the beautiful beach in front of the resort (with the crew always attentively lending hands) and were wide, spacious, and stable. Giant stride for entry and a great boarding process via lowered stairway under the outriggers for re-boarding.

Diving was a daily mix of gorgeous reefs and sandy muck dives. Nudies were absolutely everywhere. Some of the walls in this area were the most lush and beautiful I’ve ever seen. No big fish or large schools, but all the usual Pacific suspects on the medium-small side = SO MANY FROGFISH, a ton of turtles–mainly green, sea snakes, lots of morays, pygmy seahorses, peacock mantis shrimp, giant mantis shrimp, scorpionfish, ornate ghost pipefish, blue ring octopous, wonderpus, Spanish dancer, cuttlefish, various macro crab and shrimp species. They did offer a mandarin dive one night (after 2 of these here and in Lembeh, I’ve fulfilled my lifetime quota). We were doing 4 dives/day on most days; the last dive ended up being dusk/night. Some portion of at least some of the dives were spent on sandy slopes searching for muck critters. Some loved this; I like it to some extent, but prefer reefs vs. muck. Most dives had a selection of both reef and muck, so everyone was happy.

There were some moderate currents at times, which we turned into drift dives.

Dive shop was adjacent to the beach with adequate rinse tanks, a large camera room and an outdoor shower.

Really enjoyed this trip – the combination of beautiful diving, great staff, great food, and very nice accommodations with a fun group of old and new friends made it really fun and relaxing. Up to this point I had convinced myself that I prefer liveaboards for big trips…this particular combo may make me change my mind.
